The Komen Philadelphia Affiliate and our loyal partner, Dietz & Watson, were thrilled to celebrate some of our youngest breast cancer activists on June 10, 2011. The group - made up of the Butterfly Class at the Kinder Academy, Bustleton Avenue in Philadelphia - was the grand-prize winner of the 2011 Dietz & Watson Pretty In Pig School Fundraising Challenge. In approximately six weeks, the Butterfly Class raised the most money per student from over twenty participating schools...utilizing dozens of Pretty In Pig piglet banks to elevate their fundraising while also generate breast cancer awareness among parents and older siblings.
This is the second of two successful years The Affiliate and Dietz & Watson have organized the Pretty In Pig fund- and awareness-raising campaign, which is open to all pre-, elementary and high schools in The Affiliate's thirteen-county service area.
"Even at such a young age, these students demonstrate to people of all ages and walks of life that every penny counts when it comes to saving lives, and that you are never too young to be aware and make a difference," said Elaine I. Grobman, Executive Director, Komen Philadelphia Affiliate. "As adults, we focus on creating a world without breast cancer for our children. But, through this program, those very children are contributing to their own future, while also helping to save lives today. Pretty In Pig is a beautiful dynamic that embraces and empowers everyone in our community."
As the Pretty In Pig School Challenge champs, Dietz & Watson treated the students and faculty of the Kinder Academy Butterfly Class a Summer 'Grillebration' party at their school, featuring hotdogs and all the fixings, freshly grilled by the expert Dietz & Watson team, fruit, juice and plenty of memorabilia to take home to share with family and friends, including Dietz & Watson pink breast cancer awareness hats and Frisbees.

In addition, Sally Rotenberg, Chairperson of the Pretty In Pig School Outreach Program, Komen Philadelphia Affiliate Volunteer and breast cancer survivor, was on hand to help run the event. On behalf of The Affiliate, Sally also presented the class with their 2011 Pretty In Pig trophy and awarded each student a pair of Phillies tickets for their extraordinary efforts.
"In just three years, the Dietz & Watson Pretty In Pig program has helped raise almost $200,000 for the cause," said Grobman. "We couldn't ask for a more perfect partner, for Dietz & Watson is truly and fully dedicated to the success of Pretty In Pig, and continuously growing the number of people we embrace. Dietz & Watson's enthusiasm for the program is contagious... anyone who drops even one dime in one of our pigs is embraced in their spirit of hope and conviction in the cures."
