Pink Ribbon Of The Month, September: I.B.E.W. Local Union 98

The grassroots activism that makes Susan G. Komen for the Cure a worldwide leader is definitely going strong throughout the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate service area. The ongoing efforts of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, led by its Business Manager, John Dougherty, create an excellent example.

This month, we are proud to honor the I.B.E.W. Local Union 98 team with our “Pink Ribbon of the Month.” In their devoted breast cancer activism, this group exemplifies teamwork to the utmost degree, demonstrating an outstanding love for their community and stellar ability to inspire each other in creating a formidable "union" in the fight to end this disease. Their clear passion for the Komen promise is an inspiration for us all.

In fact, to drive home their conviction that as a team - one community fighting together - we WILL see an end to breast cancer, I.B.E.W. has been the exclusive Team Champion for all Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure® teams since 2006. Not only does this Team Champion position involve a very substantial monetary donation to the Race each year, but it provides a spirited leadership to Team Captains and team members that undoubtedly has inspired thousands to give it their all to raise funds and embrace everyone they know in the hope of the cure.

For nearly two years, I.B.E.W. Business Manager, John Dougherty has deepened his activism in helping to save lives by serving on the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate Board of Directors. Lending to the Board his leadership experience, resources, endless hours and passion for giving back, Dougherty has been a unique asset whose ideas and get-it-done approach have certainly helped to shape the recent progress of The Affiliate in empowering thousands to fight breast cancer.

"Part of John's legacy with I.B.E.W. has been the creation of a union culture that always remembers to give to those in need, and give back to the community that remains loyal to them," said Elaine I. Grobman, Executive Director of the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate. "To that end, he has inspired I.B.E.W.’s members to donate their time and talents in support of numerous charitable organizations. Perhaps the strongest embodiment of this is their activism in support of the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate. We are fortunate and honored to call him and every member of I.B.E.W. Local Union 98 our dearest friends in the fight against breast cancer."

In addition to being the exclusive Team Champion of more than 1,000 Race teams, and being  active members of the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate family for more than five years, Dougherty and I.B.E.W. members put their feet where their mouths are, by walking as a team on Race day and raising thousands of dollars in team funds. From walking, generating funds and raising awareness, to volunteering, and even donating their outdoor advertising to The Affiliate to spread the word about the Race, I.B.E.W.'s passion shows no boundaries.

The Komen Philadelphia Affiliate congratulates I.B.E.W. on their exceptional service to our community - as skilled professionals, as well as passionate activists - and sincerely thanks them for everything they do for us. In all they do, I.B.E.W. continually helps us all to see the vision of a world without breast cancer and BELIEVE in its reality.
