Pink Ribbon of the Month, January: PA Horticultural Society

For January, the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate is delighted to tie a long, loving pink ribbon around the 'trunk' of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS). Although the seeds of our relationship have been planted only recently, the energy, passion and generosity shown to us by the PHS team in just a few short months leaves no doubt that our friendship will blossom into an ongoing and powerful resource for everyone united in our community breast cancer movement.

Not only is what  the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS)  brings to The Affiliate full of inspiration for every activist in the fight against breast cancer, but our relationship also offers an important lesson about how two not-for-profit organizations-with seemingly totally different missions-can find new power and successes simply by thinking creatively, sharing their resources and opening their hearts to the possibilities.

"Many people wonder what another non-profit organization could possibly do to help us raise money for the fight against breast cancer," said Elaine I. Grobman, Executive Director of the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate. "The first time The Affiliate met with the PHS, I knew they possessed a passion for the Komen Promise that was far beyond something you can put a dollar value on.  They never asked 'how' would it get done, but instead 'how much' can we do to bring our world closer to being rid of breast cancer forever."

"In fact, a relationship like ours-both of us being no-profits-is driving The Affiliate and PHS teams to unearth resources neither one of us knew we had, because we can't depend on someone simply 'writing a check' to help us achieve our shared goals of generating funds and awareness for our missions.  So, again, you can see why it's impossible to quantify the value of our relationship."

As one of its first generous contributions, PHS is giving The Affiliate the opportunity to be part of the 2011 Philadelphia International Flower Show. At the event (March 6-13), The Affiliate will have a kiosk in a high-traffic location, allowing us to connect with millions of people, register them for the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure and educated them about Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Also, for a $2 donation to The Affiliate, you can get a pink ribbon to tie around your favorite tree to honor or celebrate a loved one.

At our Race, PHS will have a presence on Sponsors Alley, encouraging Race goers to 'Get Planted in the Cures' with a unique opportunity to support the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate AND a greener environment. In addition, at their table, for a $2 donation to The Affiliate, you can get a pink ribbon to tie around your favorite tree to honor or celebrate a loved one.

The activities we are sharing this March and May are just the beginning - you'll also see PHS helping to distinguish our Race Kick-Off Party in February, and keep an eye out later this spring for how you can become part of the PHS one-million trees campaign and experience just how well PINK and GREEN go together!

With a focus on 'Planting Seeds. Growing Lives.' the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's is certainly doing just that - and, in fact is helping to save lives - by upholding the Komen Promise to end breast cancer forever.
