Being only a few months away from the 20th anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure®, we could think of no more worthy recipient of this month's Pink Ribbon award than the extraordinary team at the Philadelphia Police Department, who - for all twenty years - have provided steadfast service to assure every Race participant can enjoy the event safely and happily.
Providing us with stellar protection at the Race site and along the Race route, traffic assistance and crowd control, and all needs in between, the Department has been with us every step of the way in our twenty-year history... enabling us not only to put on a successful Race event, but being an exceptional role model for all of us to keep up the good fight.
"Simply put we couldn't have done it then, or now, without our loyal men and women in blue," said Elaine I. Grobman, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "What the police contribute to the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate mission cannot be measured with a mere dollar value - for how can you put a price on the hours, loyalty, creativity, and service they devote to protecting and empowering our entirety community day in and day out?"
The activism and devotion of the department manifests itself in many more ways throughout the year. From pink-bucket collections that supported our first CBS 3 Call for the Cure telethon, to simply spreading important breast cancer awareness messages within various district offices, the Police make it clear they will do anything within their reach to help advance the Komen promise to end breast cancer forever.
In this anniversary year, we'd like to give a "special shout" out to Captain Dennis Wilson of the 9th District for stepping up to serve as a liaison for other districts in the Department and the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate. Through Captain Wilson's leadership, inspiration, hard work and generosity, this year we hope to see many Police teams running, walking and raising funds for the Race. In addition, the entire Komen Philadelphia Race community will be greeted with a very special Police Honor Guard to distinguish our Survivors Parade of Pink!
Captain Wilson was also the inspiration behind the very exciting - and profitable - police ride-along adventures which generated more than $8,000 for the 2009 Komen Philadelphia Pink Tie Ball live auction. Click here to see photos of the actual ride-alongs with Mayor Michael A. Nutter.
The Komen Philadelphia Affiliate congratulates Commissioner Ramsey, Captain Wilson and the entire Philadelphia Police Department on their exceptional service to our community - as skilled professionals as well as passionate activists. We sincerely thank them for everything they do for us. In all they do, this distinguished team continually helps us all to see the vision of a world without breast cancer and BELIEVE in its reality.
