Pick Your Pink Prudently this NBCAM

Six Things To Consider Before You Buy

Not all pink products are created equal. And let's face it, in the weeks leading up to, during and following National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), you'll find products with pink ribbons down nearly every grocery store aisle, as well as other types of stores and online. The goal is to create breast cancer awareness and give consumers the opportunity to help fight the disease through their purchases. But, with so many pink products around every corner, it's understandable you might feel overwhelmed. Susan G. Komen for the Cure offers six guidelines to help you "Pick you Pink Prudently" and feel confident your purchase is in line with your breast cancer mission.

I. Look for a logo you recognize

If you're not comfortable with generic claims such as, "Supports Breast Cancer Research," look for a logo you recognize, like the signature Komen for the Cure Running Ribbon.

II. Check the packaging for details

Komen partners specify how your purchase or participation benefits Komen.

III. Check websites for details about partner programs

Information about Komen partners is clearly spelled out at www.Komen.org.

IV. Understand the charity by visiting its website

Is this a cause in which you believe? Do you support the organization's work?

V. Understand where you money goes

Responsible charities are transparent about their finances. Most list their financial information on their websites. Komen spends 84¢ of every dollar on research, support and education programs

VI. Get confirmation

Check websites like Charity Navigator and better Business Bureau Wise giving Alliance for information about the charity. For example, Komen is proud to have earned a 4-star Charity Navigator rating three years in a row, and is a Better Business Bureau Accredited Charity.
